The TRICARE Retiree Dental Program (TRDP) is a PPO (preferred provider organization) benefit program that offers an expansive network of dentists in over 160,000 locations nationwide. Two national networks, Delta Dental Legion and Delta Dental PPO (DPO in Texas), comprise the participating TRDP dentist network. Enrollees in the TRDP are strongly encouraged to seek treatment from a participating TRDP network dentist. Since they pay 100% of the premium for their TRDP coverage, enrollees count on optimum program value and quality dental care—both of which they will get when their dental treatment is provided by a participating TRDP network dentist. Claims processing and payment policies for TRDP covered treatment are defined below.
TRDP Participating Dentist Networks
Delta Dental PPO/DPO and Delta Dental Legion Networks
Dentists who belong to the Delta Dental PPO/DPO and Delta Dental Legion networks:
- Are responsible for submitting all claims on behalf of each eligible TRDP patient for all treatment rendered.
- Will have payment for services rendered sent directly to their office.
- Cannot charge TRDP patients the difference between the Delta Dental network-approved fee and the submitted fee (which should be the usual & customary fee).
- Agree to adhere to the processing policies for TRDP covered services based on national Delta Dental processing policies and the provisions of Delta Dental’s TRDP contract with the Department of Defense.
Delta Dental Legion network dentists who are not Delta Dental PPO/DPO network dentists will be reimbursed based on the established regional Delta Dental Legion network dentist fee schedule.
Delta Dental PPO/DPO network dentists, with or without other Delta Dental network agreements, will be reimbursed based on the local Delta Dental member company's established maximum allowable PPO/DPO reimbursement fee tables.
Non-network Dentists
Dentists who are not participating in either of the networks that serve the TRDP are considered “non-network” dentists. There are two categories of non-network dentists: Delta Dental Premier® network dentists and dentists who do not belong to any Delta Dental network (referred to as “non-Delta Dental” dentists).
Delta Dental Premier®
Dentists who belong to the Delta Dental Premier® network:
- Have agreed to submit all claims on behalf of each eligible TRDP patient for all treatment that is rendered.
- Will have payment for services rendered sent directly to their office.
- Will be reimbursed for TRDP services based on a non-network fee allowance and can only charge the TRDP patient the copayment plus any difference up to the approved fee schedule (i.e. maximum plan allowance, or MPA) on file with their local Delta Dental member company.
- Agree to adhere to the processing policies for TRDP covered services based on national Delta Dental processing policies and the provisions of Delta Dental’s TRDP contract with the Department of Defense. .
Non-Delta Dental Dentists
Dentists who do not belong to any Delta Dental network:
- Will have their claims for covered TRDP services processed in accordance with a non-network fee allowance.
- Will not have payment sent directly to their office; the patient must authorize the assignment of TRDP benefits to the dentist otherwise payment is made to the subscriber.
- Are allowed to collect payment in full, up to the submitted fee, from the patient at the time services are rendered.
