Monday, May 31 is Memorial Day
Memorial Day is a United States federal holiday observed on the last Monday of May. Formerly known as Decoration Day, it started as an event to honor Union soldiers who had died during the American Civil War. After World War I, it was extended to commemorate all U.S. men and women who have died while in military service. |

The current name of “Memorial Day” did not come into use for this day until after World War II. Memorial Day used to be held on May 30, regardless of the day of the week on which it fell. However, the Uniform Holidays Bill was passed in 1968 to use federal holidays to create three-day weekends, and Memorial Day is now officially observed on the last Monday in May.
Memorial Day is an official federal holiday. All non-essential government offices are closed, as are many schools, businesses and other organizations. Most public transit systems do not run on their regular schedule.
Memorial Day is considered as the start of summer, and Memorial Day weekend is seen by many as an opportunity to go on a short vacation or visit family or friends. Picnics, sporting events and family gatherings are Memorial Day traditions.
The United States flag is traditionally flown at half mast from dawn until noon on Memorial Day. Many people visit cemeteries and memorials to honor those who have died in military service. Volunteers place an American flag on each grave in national cemeteries throughout the country. On May 31, Delta Dental and the TRDP will join all Americans in honoring our nation’s military personnel who gave their lives in service to our country, as well as those present and former members who have made sacrifices to preserve and protect the freedoms that we enjoy today.
