Don’t forget your end-of-year dental benefits checklist

If you haven’t seen your dentist in a while, now is a great time to schedule that appointment. The end-of-the-year marks the busiest time for the health care industry as people rush to maximize their benefits.

Before this year ends, follow this checklist to maximize your dental benefits.

  1. Use your preventive benefits

The TRICARE Retiree Dental Program (TRDP) focuses on preventive care and completely covers services like regular exams and cleanings when you see a TRDP participating network dentist. Take advantage of this coverage, as preventive care can benefit your oral and overall health and save you money in the long run.

  1. Check your deductible

Your deductible is the specific dollar amount you pay out of pocket toward covered services before the TRDP applies payment to those services. Under the TRDP, routine cleanings and exams don’t count toward your deductible

If you’ve met your deductible for this year, now may be a good time to schedule any dental treatment you’ve been delaying. Like most plans, the TRDP resets your deductible on January 1 of each new year.

  1. Know your annual maximum

Your annual maximum is the maximum dollar amount the TRDP will pay toward the cost of your covered dental care. Note that the maximum amount doesn’t include your monthly premiums or anything you spend for services that the TRDP doesn’t cover. Also, keep in mind that once you’ve used up your maximum, you’ll be responsible for paying the entire cost of your dental care for the rest of the year. But if you’ve been saving money by seeing a TRDP network dentist, chances are you still have some money left to use for additional services. Just be sure to use it up by the end of the year, since any amount remaining doesn’t roll over into the next year. The TRDP also resets your $1,300 annual maximum on January 1.

The best way to keep track of your benefits, deductible and maximums used year to date is through the Consumer Toolkit®. Access the toolkit to manage your account and review any benefit updates effective January 1. (If you’re not currently registered, set up a new account today!) Check out our Consumer Toolkit video to learn more about this valuable online service.
